Deck & Fence Staining in Alberta

The Alberta climate can sometimes be cruel to your wooden fence or deck. Moisture, sun, and rain are the common enemies of your outside wood. If you don’t properly protect this investment, it will begin to fall victim to the elements in as little as six months and start looking grey. The wood starts to bow up or just deteriorate. Whatever the condition, we can bring your weathered wood back to life in almost all cases.

Mill Creek Painters has offered professional deck and fence staining in Alberta for many years. Whether you are looking for a solid stain to renew an older deck or fence, or you like the semi-transparent wood grain look, we can revitalize and protect your exterior wood and make it last many more years at an affordable price. See below for a deck we refinished in Edmonton in 2021.

Why Wood Requires Product Application

Stained wood stays protected while untreated wood dries out.
  • Protection from greying (sun damage)

  • Prevents cracking/warping/splintering

  • Prevents rotting

  • Preserves the natural colour

  • Increase home value

How Is A Surface Prepared Before Applying Product?

How a surface is prepared depends largely on the state of the surface when we arrive on site, what type of product is currently on the wood and what type of product is being applied after preparation.

Generally, if a wood is brand new, there is little prep needed, which is why it is so crucial to protect the surface immediately upon install. The longer you wait, the higher the cost will be to restore the colour/ surface prior to a product being applied. If you are choosing an oil, no waiting period is needed to let the wood breath prior to application. The faster it can be applied, the better the colour will turn out.

If the wood is not brand new, a level of brightener will need to be applied and washed off to restore as much of the natural colour as possible. Once the wood is dry, a light sanding will likely be needed prior to applying the product.

If the wood already has a product on it, it is likely that some level of stripping, sanding, scraping will be required to restore the surface prior to applying another product. Choosing the right product the first time, means not having to go through this restoration process, saving time, money and aesthetics.
